Chapter 11

Last Trip

ACOOL AFTERNOON breeze swept off the mountains as Doug Abel climbed out of the small fishing boat onto the dock.

White puffy cumulus clouds were set sporadically around the beautifully blue tinted sky.

Today’s fishing went better than it had all week.

A perfect ending to their trip except for the fact his sons Patrick and Don weren’t with them.

He climbed out of their fishing boat, pulled it the last few feet to shore, and tied it to a tree.

“Careful there, Paul,” Doug said, watching his grandson stand in the boat. One hand wrapped around their fishing poles, the other a string of rainbow trout.

“No problem,” Paul said, stepping into the water.

Doug’s eyes opened wide, and he almost reached out to help him, but Paul’s booted feet were in the water in an instant and on land in two steps.

“Let’s sit for a while,” Doug said, rubbing his chest. He sat in one of their colorful lawn chairs, one of their few creature comforts, they’d positioned on the edge of the lake.

“You, okay?”

“Yeah. Have a seat. I just want to sit by the lake for a bit.”

Paul set the poles up against a wide tree and hooked the line of fish over a thick broken branch stump. He removed his backpack and plopped into his chair placing the pack next to it.

“Grandpa, do you think Secret Societies exist?” Paul asked.

“Secret Societies? I’ve never given them much thought,” Doug said. “Where did that question come from?”

“Remember last week when I went with some of my friends to the library?”

“I sure do.”

“I was looking for a book I needed for a class project, and I found a five by eight-inch hard covered journal type book on the bottom shelf hidden between two back-to-back shelving units”

“It looked very old.” Paul said, reaching inside his pack, he pulled out the journal and handed it to Doug.

“It does look very old,” Doug responded.

“There is no title or name on it,” Paul said. “The handwritten notes talked about groups like the Freemasons, Knights Templar, the Illuminati, and one called Opus Dei.

“None of those groups were ever mentioned in any of my history classes. So, I wondered if they’re real.”

“Hmm,” Doug said, looking at the notepad. “If you mean a group who controls world events, I don’t know. I guess I’d have to say if they’re so secret, how come people know about them?”

“According to the journal, there’s no real way to hide any of these organizations unless it is their idea to do exactly that.”

Doug stared out over the lake rubbing his chest. “Their idea? What idea?”

“It’s like the old adage of hiding something in plain sight, or better yet, a magician,” Paul said. “A magician has you focused on his hands or whatever he’s doing and because you’re so focused on them you don’t see what he’s hiding up his sleeve or wherever.”

“I see what you mean, but what are the secret societies hiding?” Doug asked.

“Exactly the point, they aren’t hiding. They only pretend to be hiding to lead us away from the true Secret Society controlling them all.
